Since Thursday, November 7, Cote's patients have revealed alleged secrets and inappropriate diagnoses made by the psychiatrist, as well as videos where she apparently speaks in English and French, which has generated controversy.
Internet users have created memes and videos parodying Cote's attempts to speak with an American and French accent, even adding subtitles to interpret her words. Amid this controversy, Duolingo clarified on its social media that it has no connection with Marilyn Cote regarding language teaching, using a humorous tone in its statement.
"The rumors about me being Marilyn Cote's language teacher are false," Duolingo mentioned in its social media post. The company reaffirmed its commitment to free and effective education for all and distanced itself from the alleged "invented languages" by Cote. Later, more details about the psychiatrist's life were revealed, including a romantic relationship with a patient, false titles in clinical psychology, and the alleged use of Photoshop on her social media.
