Former CIA Director John Brennan has sparked widespread outrage on social media after speaking about his experience smoking 'hashish' while in Egypt. In an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper 'Al-Qabas' published last Saturday, Brennan recalled his walks through the streets of Khan el-Khalili and the Gold Souk, and wrote in his memoirs about visiting the market and smoking a shisha that contained hashish. He added that during that period, he started smoking cigarettes, but quit this habit a long time ago, noting that they used to mix hashish with tobacco in cigarettes. According to Brennan, this was done in the company of his Egyptian, American, and other friends, considering this practice to be part of the prevailing culture at the time, as they would gather in the city center every Thursday night to meet and smoke hashish. He also stated that this experience was a way for him to practice the Arabic language.
