Washington, Nov 21 (EFE).- U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Democrat Zohran Mamdani agreed that their meeting this Friday at the White House was "very productive," an encounter that took place after a tense electoral campaign full of attacks between both. At the conclusion of the meeting, Trump and Mamdani held a press conference in the Oval Office, where the republican remained seated at his desk and the democrat stood by his side, showing both an unexpected cordiality. "I have a lot of confidence that he can do a great job," said Trump, who detailed that the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, was "very productive." The republican assured that he believes New Yorkers "hopefully, will have a really excellent mayor" and promised Mamdani to help him "make the dream of all come true." The head of state, who on previous occasions called Mamdani a "communist," said that the democrat "has rather eccentric ideas" but believes that with "luck" he will surprise "many conservatives" "and also many liberals." For his part, Mamdani, who will take power on the next January 1, agreed that the meeting was "positive" and said that both have clear positions and that the meeting focused on seeking policies to serve the inhabitants of the city and not on their differences. The change of stance between both arises after a long political campaign where Mamdani referred to Trump as "a despot" and the republican in turn assured that many inhabitants of New York were going to flee to Florida due to a possible "communist regime." During the round of questions in the Oval Office, Mamdani pointed out that they also discussed the deployments of the Border Patrol in the Big Apple and Trump continued to say that both seek a city "free of crime." Zohran Mamdani's victory in the municipal elections on November 4, 2025, was historic: he obtained approximately 50.6% of the votes against 41.2% for Andrew Cuomo and 7.4% for Curtis Sliwa and at only 34 years old, he becomes one of the youngest mayors in the recent history of the city and is the first Muslim mayor of New York.
