Sheinbaum and Trump Meeting in Washington: Little Trade Progress

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged that her first in-person meeting with Donald Trump in Washington, during the World Cup draw, yielded little progress in trade negotiations. "It went very well, very productive, we mainly talked about trade," she stated. Sheinbaum emphasized that the mere fact of the three regional leaders meeting—Mexico, the U.S., and Canada—sends an important message. It is worth recalling that the president and her team were undecided for days about participating in the draw and especially in a meeting with Trump, which was finally confirmed the day before. Sheinbaum assured that it would be "a good time to talk about USMCA." "It's not that we advanced in the private meeting, because we met with the three countries, but we agreed to keep working," Sheinbaum responded when asked about the meeting. She added, "When we can move forward more, we will inform you, but it was a very respectful meeting." The president described Trump as being very kind to her, "reflecting that there is recognition."
