A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to end the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles and return command of the federalized troops to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called it 'illegal'. California had been locked in a legal battle with the White House over the deployment last June of more than 4,000 California National Guard soldiers without the governor's consent, an unprecedented event in the U.S. Federal Judge Charles Breyer sided with the state of California, ratifying a September opinion in which he ruled that the military deployment to supposedly contain protests against raids was illegal. Trump ordered the military presence to contain protests against immigration raids, arguing that local authorities could not handle the situation, despite the Los Angeles police having already dispersed the demonstrators. Governor Gavin Newsom stated that 'the federalization of the National Guard in California is illegal and must end.' Judge Breyer rejected the Trump administration's claim that the protests in Los Angeles constituted an 'insurrection' sufficient to justify the continued deployment of troops.
