US Ends Temporary Protection for Ethiopian Nationals

The U.S. government announced on Friday that the Trump administration has ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopian nationals residing in the United States. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated in the official notice: "Following a review of the country's conditions and consultation with relevant government agencies, it has been determined that Ethiopia no longer meets the criteria for Temporary Protected Status." Previously, the U.S. president had granted TPS to citizens of several countries since taking office in January as part of his immigration campaign. Under U.S. law, "Temporary Protected Status" is a humanitarian designation for countries affected by wars, natural disasters, or other catastrophes. It protects beneficiaries residing in America from deportation and grants them the right to work permits.
