US President Donald Trump criticized yesterday the decision by Paris to grant American actor George Clooney and his wife, Lebanese-British lawyer Amal Clooney, French citizenship. Trump stated that France is suffering from a "horrible" problem regarding crime and immigration. Clooney and his eight-year-old twins had received French citizenship by decree, published on Saturday in the official gazette. On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "Good news! George and Amal Clooney, among the worst political predictors of all time, have officially become French citizens, and this country, unfortunately, suffers from a major crime problem due to its horrific handling of immigration." In one of his New Year's posts, Trump added that these problems in France "are very similar to what we had under Sleepy Joe Biden," his Democratic predecessor. Clooney is one of the most prominent supporters of the Democratic Party and a staunch critic of Trump. Trump also pointed out that the actor supported Biden during the 2024 US presidential election but then "abandoned" him due to concerns about the Democratic candidate's age at a fundraising event. He added: "Clooney has gotten more publicity in politics than he ever did in his few modest films. He wasn't a movie star, just an ordinary guy who constantly complained about common sense in politics."
