Trump Evaluating Options to Purchase Greenland

White House confirms Trump administration is exploring ways to purchase Greenland from Denmark, sparking strong reactions from Copenhagen and NATO allies.

Trump Evaluating Options to Purchase Greenland

US President Donald Trump is evaluating 'a series of options' to purchase Greenland, which currently belongs to Denmark. This was admitted today by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. 'The president and his team are discussing a series of options to achieve this important foreign policy objective, and of course, using the US Army is always an option available to the commander in chief,' Leavitt said in a statement sent by email. Additionally, Leavitt noted that 'President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a US national security priority, which is vital for deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region.' In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Monday: 'If the US decides to militarily attack another NATO country, then everything stops, including NATO, and thus the security established since the end of World War II.' Leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Denmark issued a joint statement today indicating that 'it is up to Denmark and Greenland, and only them, to decide on their affairs.' Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in controlling Greenland and has indicated that he does not rule out using 'military or economic coercion' to achieve this goal.
