Machado says Trump is fully committed to freedom of Venezuelan political prisoners

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado assured this Thursday, after meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, that the head of state is fully "committed to the freedom of Venezuela's political prisoners and all Venezuelans".

Machado conveyed the commitment expressed by the U.S. leader to a crowd of her supporters at the exit of the Senate, where she made a brief statement after meeting with members of the Foreign Relations Committee, mainly Republican congressmen.

The Venezuelan leader added that she told Trump that "today more than 90% of Venezuelans want the same thing, we want to live with freedom, with dignity, with justice."

Inside the Senate, Machado held talks with senators such as Republican Rick Scott, who on previous occasions had expressed his support for the Venezuelan opposition leader.

Subsequently, before leaving, Machado said that this morning she had also spoken with Edmundo González, the Venezuelan opposition leader who claims victory in the 2024 elections held in Venezuela.

This Thursday marked the first meeting between Machado and Trump, after U.S. forces deposed Maduro during a military attack in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture and transfer of the Chavista leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, to New York to face alleged drug trafficking charges.

So far, the president and his Administration have dismissed Machado and her opposition movement for the first stage of the transition in Venezuela on the grounds that the leader "does not have the necessary support" within the country.

Instead, they have bet on Maduro's vice president, Delcy RodrĂguez, who assumed power as interim president with Trump's approval, who ensures that the Venezuelan nation is under Washington's tutelage.
