Withdrawing 700 federal officers from Minneapolis was the first step in this direction. For decades, Minnesota has been seen as a land of fraud in food assistance and child care programs, costing billions of dollars. However, Americans, and more importantly the media, do not find the necessary investigative work to expose this fraud as sensational as ICE officers on the state's streets pulling American citizens from their cars and then arresting them, which led to widespread public anger. Fraud cases were particularly targeted at the Republican Party, which has spent decades trying to reduce spending and tighten regulations on similar social service programs. According to a recent analysis by The Wall Street Journal, the arguments used by Republicans have lost their credibility. Immigration policy needs a complete reset, experts say, and should be managed by people with extensive law enforcement experience, not political figures with little such experience. Voter support for ICE officers' tactics is diminishing day by day. However, in terms of immigration enforcement, Republicans in Washington have overreacted and forgotten the importance of voter opinion. Any federal law enforcement officer who does not understand that the Second Amendment to the Constitution and Minnesota state law grant any licensed citizen the right to carry a firearm openly, as Breite did, has no place on America's streets. Officials and Congress must ensure that these officers, who carry live ammunition, receive proper training before being allowed to deal with American citizens. Republicans who try to justify the shooting of Breite because he was carrying a weapon risk undermining their traditional alliance.
