Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty to Parents' Murder

Rob Reiner, the director of 'When Harry Met Sally,' and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home on December 14. The couple's middle son was arrested the following day. The couple's daughter discovered her parents in the house after a masseuse called to inform her that they were not answering the door. Nick Reiner had spoken publicly for years about his struggle with substance addiction. He was also diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago, while some media reported that he was receiving treatment for a severe psychiatric disorder at the time of the murder, so this condition is expected to be a relevant factor in the case. On Monday, Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty in a Los Angeles County courthouse to the alleged murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. The 32-year-old Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his parents on December 14. The case includes 'special circumstances,' aggravating factors that California law considers eligible for the death penalty or life without parole. Reiner, wearing a one-piece cinnamon-colored outfit and with a shaved head, only spoke in court to waive his right to a speedy trial, which means accepting that the process will extend beyond the legally established deadline. Reiner's next court appearance is set for April 29. The arraignment was scheduled for January 7 but was postponed after his criminal defense attorney, Alan Jackson, who in the past has represented figures such as Harvey Weinstein or Kevin Spacey, withdrew from the case.
