Son of Famous Director Charged with Parents' Murder in Los Angeles

32-year-old Nick Reiner, son of director Rob Reiner, is charged with double murder of his parents. He waived his right to a speedy trial. The case is complicated by a schizophrenia diagnosis and potential special circumstances, which could lead to life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Reiner, 32, faces two first-degree murder charges in connection with the deaths of his parents on December 14. According to NBC, Reiner was wearing a brown one-piece outfit, had a shaved head, and only spoke in court to waive his right to a speedy trial, which implies accepting that the process will be prolonged beyond the legally established deadline. Reiner's next court appearance is scheduled for April 29. Nick Reiner had spoken publicly for years about his struggle with substance addiction. On Monday, Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to the alleged murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, in a state court in downtown Los Angeles. Reiner, who remains in prison without the possibility of bail, was assigned public defender Kimberly Green as his legal representative. The couple was found by their daughter, who arrived at the house after a masseuse called her to let her know that her parents were not opening the door, according to the Los Angeles Times. The arraignment was scheduled for January 7, but was delayed after his criminal defense attorney, Alan Jackson, who in the past has represented figures such as Harvey Weinstein or Kevin Spacey, withdrew from the case. The case includes 'special circumstances', aggravating factors that California law considers eligible for the death penalty or life without the possibility of parole. He was also diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago, while some media reported that he was receiving treatment for a severe psychiatric disorder at the time of the murder, so it is expected that this condition will have a significant weight in the case. Director of 'When Harry Met Sally', Rob Reiner, and photographer Michele Singer Reiner were found stabbed inside their Brentwood home on December 14, and the couple's middle son was arrested the next day.
