Newsom Nominates Schwarzenegger to California Hall of Fame

Governor of California Gavin Newsom has nominated Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Hall of Fame, although it took longer than expected. Schwarzenegger, who, as governor, explicitly opposed redistricting, now tops the list of inductees for the 19th class. In a statement, it says: 'Thanks to their close ties with Los Angeles, a city whose influence and imagination continue to shape culture worldwide, their stories not only celebrate individual achievements but also reflect California's ability to inspire, open doors, and reimagine what's possible for future generations.' The honorees for 2026 will be recognized at the state capital in Sacramento on March 19 during a ceremony held at the state capital museum. Last Tuesday, about six months after Schwarzenegger's name was conspicuously absent from an initial list presented by the governor at a reception, Newsom announced the inclusion of his predecessor along with eight others who 'represent the best of California's spirit.' The California Hall of Fame was launched in 2006 to honor individuals who have shaped history, embodied the state's innovative spirit, and made a difference in California, America, and the world. For members of the former Republican governor's administration who anticipated his recognition, the omission of his name last summer raised questions about whether it was influenced by Schwarzenegger's opposition to Newsom's redistricting maneuver. Now, three months later, Newsom praised his predecessor in a statement, calling him 'a unique figure in California history' who embodies 'the promise of opportunity in California.' Newsom said: 'From humble beginnings, he built himself up to become a world champion bodybuilder, a Hollywood icon, a successful businessman, an environmentalist, a philanthropist, an author, and the 38th governor of California.' Among other notable figures being honored are Hollywood star and humanitarian Jamie Lee Curtis, long-distance swimmer and athletic director Janet Evans, and chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, who helped build the Nobu restaurant empire.'
