NATO Secretary General to Meet Trump Amid Frustration with Allies

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday at a time when the head of state has expressed frustration with the alliance for its lack of support in the war with Iran. Rutte will also meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, according to a press release issued this Friday, reported by CNN and learned by the Argentine News Agency. CNN had previously reported on Rutte's expected visit to Washington to meet with Trump at some point next week. A NATO spokesperson, Allison Hart, told CNN that the meeting had been 'planned for a long time.' Rutte will remain in Washington until April 12; during his stay, he will also deliver a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Institute and attend the Bilderberg Conference, an annual confidential forum that brings together political leaders from Europe and North America. More than 40 countries met virtually yesterday to discuss strategies aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction that NATO allies and regional countries have not stepped forward to help reopen the strait after the United States and Israel began the war with Iran.
