German Foreign Minister Johann Waddevoyl expressed concern over US President Donald Trump's statements about a potential US withdrawal from NATO. The top German diplomat told Funke media group: 'Of course, such statements worry me,' but he also noted that it is still possible to prevent the US from leaving the alliance. He said: 'He would at least need the approval of the US Senate.' Indeed, Trump ultimately faced opposition from both the Republican and Democratic parties in the Senate due to his statements. Recently, Trump and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio once again threatened that the US would leave NATO because the allies refused to engage in a war with Iran. In response to a question from the British newspaper Daily Telegraph about whether he would reconsider NATO membership, Trump said: 'Yes, I would say that it has gone beyond reconsideration.' He added: 'I believe our clear commitment and firm support for the alliance will convince the United States to continue this success story together.' Waddevoyl confirmed that 'NATO is of immense importance for Germany's security and that of all other allies,' pointing to the accession of Sweden and Finland and the Europeans' commitment to spend 5% of GDP on defense. The German Foreign Minister also noted that Trump cannot decide on a withdrawal from NATO alone.
