The Battle of Presidents: When a Candidate Wins Despite Losing the Popular Vote

In the history of the United States, there are cases when presidents were elected regardless of what they won in the popular vote. The first to encounter such a situation was John Quincy Adams in 1824. In total, five American presidents throughout the history of the country have gone through this experience.

This list also includes three presidents from the 19th century and one from the 20th century. Despite the failure in the popular vote, these candidates managed to win the elections thanks to the support of the electoral college.

Such a premature result of American elections can provoke anger and disputes within society. Sometimes this leads to discussions about the necessity to revise the system of electing the president in the USA.

"This country has already dealt with such situations. We need more modern ways to elect a president so that the voice of every citizen has equal weight," noted one of the political analysts.
