Patrick Mahomes will seek a second opinion on his left ACL tear before undergoing surgery, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced, and it is still unclear if the two-time MVP quarterback could be available for the start of the next season.
Mahomes suffered the knee injury when he was tackled while trying to keep Kansas City's playoff hopes alive in the final moments of the 16-13 loss to the Chargers on Sunday. The team announced the severity of the injury in a statement shortly after.
The Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in a decade when three other results did not go their way on Sunday.
Mahomes is scheduled to see Dr. Dan Cooper, a respected orthopedist and the Dallas Cowboys' team physician, before the procedure to repair the ligament.
