A 48-year-old swimmer and CrossFit athlete named Hannah Caldas (also known as Ana Caldas) decided to retire from sports after being suspended last October for refusing a test to determine her sex.

In October 2025, the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) imposed a five-year suspension on her, which will last until 2030.

The sanction came after Caldas refused to undergo a chromosomal sex verification test.

As a result, all her sporting results obtained between June 2022 and October 2024 were annulled, including five titles won at the U.S. Spring National Masters Swimming Championship.

Before the controversy, Caldas was a prominent swimmer in the Masters category, holding several national records in the U.S. and world records in relays. She also competed internationally at the CrossFit Games and was close to qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics with the Portuguese team.

Following the suspension, Caldas issued a statement announcing her definitive retirement from competitive swimming, stating that she prefers to leave the sport rather than compromise her medical privacy.
