Actor Michael Douglas said he had spoken with Rob Reiner about the difficulties and problems their children were facing before the director's death, which is allegedly at the hands of his son, Nick.

Reiner was "a man who always gave the best of himself," said the star of 'Basic Instinct,' explaining that he and the director would "connect" when they talked about their respective children.

In the CBS special 'Rob Reiner: Scenes from a Life,' aired Monday night and dedicated to the late filmmaker, Douglas commented that dealing with his own son Cameron Douglas's drug addiction helped him connect with Reiner and the problems with his son, Nick.

"I also had a son who had problems with drugs," he added.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead in their California home on December 14. Their son, Nick, the second of the couple's three children, was arrested hours later and charged with two counts of murder.

The Los Angeles Police Department subsequently accused "Nick Reiner, 32-year-old son of Robert and Michele Reiner, as being responsible for their deaths."

Douglas called Reiner's death a "terrible tragedy" and added, "Knowing everything that was going on behind the scenes, I knew this was a man who always gave the best of himself."

Reiner and Douglas collaborated on the 1995 political drama 'The American President' and the 2014 romantic comedy 'And So It Goes.'

According to Variety, Douglas's son was released from prison in 2016 after serving approximately seven years for drug-related charges.

The CBS special also included interviews with Jerry O'Connell, Kathy Bates, Albert Brooks, Annette Bening, and Mandy Patinkin.

Douglas added that he and Reiner "talked a lot about that and about what you can and cannot do as a father."

"I'm happy to say that he has overcome it and is living a prosperous life," Douglas stated.
