Police mentioned that the note included a threat to harm people if the teller did not hand over the money, although the man did not claim to be armed. In two instances, according to the police, the man partially succeeded: he managed to flee with $320 from a branch in Queens last Friday, and $265 from a branch in Brooklyn last Saturday. A man entered one of the banks and handed the teller a note. Half an hour later, he entered another branch of the same bank and repeated the same action. The next day, after a two-day break, he visited two more branches. According to the police, the man attempted to rob six Chase Bank branches over five days across New York City. On Tuesday, in a bank in Harlem, he left with only $20, according to the police. In the other three cases, a police press release stated that 'the individual did not obtain any money and fled on foot in an unknown direction.' Later, the police identified the suspect as Gustavo de Jesus Torres, 33, and released several surveillance camera photos of him. He is a bald man with a beard and no mustache. The New York Times reported that Torres was arrested on charges of stealing $600, as confirmed by the police. The police stated that he was wearing a mask during at least one of the robberies and attempts.
