First Crewed Moon Mission in Over 50 Years Concludes

The Artemis 2 capsule and its four-member crew successfully passed through Earth's atmosphere and landed safely in the Pacific Ocean, concluding the first crewed mission to the Moon in over 50 years. NASA's Orion capsule splashed down safely off the coast of Southern California, finishing a four-day mission during which the astronauts traveled 252,765 miles from Earth—the farthest point in space ever reached by humans. The Artemis 2 mission covered a total distance of 1,117,515 kilometers through two orbits around the Earth, in addition to flying near the Moon at a distance of about 4,000 miles from its surface. This is the first crewed test flight as part of a series of Artemis missions aimed at returning astronauts to the lunar surface starting in 2028. The landing, which took place under partially cloudy skies, was broadcast live on NASA's website. NASA commentator Rob Navias said moments after landing: "A perfect landing for the vehicle and its four crew members": Americans Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Reid Wiseman, and Canadian Jeremy Hansen. Mission commander Reid Wiseman reported via radio immediately after landing: "The situation is stable".
