American police reported that the parents of a young child were several meters away, distracted by their phones, when a wolf bit him at a zoo in Pennsylvania. The incident, which occurred on Saturday at "ZooAmerica" — part of the Hersheypark entertainment complex — happened after a 17-month-old child slipped through a gap in the outer fence and reached his hand through the wolf enclosure fence. According to the police report from Derry Township: "It appears that one of the wolves in the enclosure took the child's mouth in a natural and instinctive manner." Police explained that while passersby were trying to move the child away, the parents, who were sitting on benches, "noticed the commotion." According to the "Mercury News" website, the couple — a 61-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman from Lititz, Pennsylvania — will be charged with endangering the welfare of a child, which is a misdemeanor. The zoo issued a statement describing the child's injuries as minor and describing the wolf's "contact" with the child as "natural animal behavior" and not a sign of aggression, as the enclosure houses three gray wolves.
