FAA Warns of Risks in Venezuelan Airspace

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning to U.S. airlines and pilots about increasing risks in Venezuelan airspace, specifically in the Maiquetía Flight Region. According to an official statement, since September 2025, an increase in interference to satellite navigation systems (GNSS) and heightened military activity by the Venezuelan armed forces have been detected. It details that some civilian flights reported navigation failures while crossing Venezuelan airspace, with effects that persisted for the remainder of the journey. Similarly, the FAA warned that GNSS jammers and spoofers can affect aircraft at more than 250 nautical miles, compromising communications, navigation, surveillance, and critical safety systems. The FAA also noted that the Venezuelan government has conducted multiple military exercises and ordered the mobilization of thousands of troops and reservists since early September. Although Venezuela has not expressed any intention to attack civil aviation, its armed forces possess advanced fighter jets and weapon systems capable of reaching operational altitudes of commercial aircraft, as well as portable anti-aircraft weaponry that poses a risk at low altitudes. The FAA also assured that it will continue to monitor the air safety situation in the region and take necessary measures to protect U.S. civil aviation.
