The U.S. Army announced Wednesday that it killed an Iranian official who led a unit behind a purported assassination attempt against President Donald Trump. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated at a press conference, "We tracked down and killed the commander of a unit that attempted to assassinate President Trump. Iran tried to kill President Trump, but President Trump had the final word." Hegseth did not name the individual but said the operation took place on Tuesday. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice charged an Iranian man linked to a purported operation ordered by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to assassinate Trump, who was then the president-elect before assuming office early last year.
