New York, Nov 5. — The newly elected mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, celebrated his victory on Tuesday before thousands of his followers, quoting socialist presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs by saying, "I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity."
Mamdani thanked "taxi drivers, Mexican grandmothers, workers" and also thanked his parents directly for "making the man he is today," and expressed pride in his origins after becoming the first Muslim to lead the Big Apple.
The Democrat won the election with over a million votes, which is 50% of the electorate. He added that now "we are breathing the air of a reborn city," offering to rebuild New York.
